Is Drake a Genius?

My husband and I were having this discussion. Sure, we both laughed at all the memes of Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’ that have been posted all over social media since the release of the video on Monday. But, after the laughter died down, we had a real conversation about whether or not Drake really is a genius.

I mean, this is not the first time Drake has shown us his…uh…dance moves (insert ‘Started From the Bottom’). However, this is the first time that Drake’s dance movies have been on full display.

And, to be honest, it’s a little…weird.

And not solely due to the fact that he can’t dance, but more because rappers don’t dance. I guess whether or not Drake is considered a rapper, singer or rapinger (rap singer) is completely debatable. But the one thing that isn’t debatable is that rappers don’t dance.

All they do is this…

Two-step…

Or, some variation of shuffling that resembles dancing ever so slightly. They save the dancing for singers (insert Chris Brown) or for whatever talentless hack created the nae nae.

Jay-Z, 2Pac, Biggie, Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Outkast…the list goes on. I’m trying to think back, but I can’t ever remember a rapper (after the 1980s, 1990s) showcasing any awkward dance moves (does MC Hammer count?).

Rappers don’t dance.

Or do they?

No one can deny that Drake makes great music. No matter how many Degrassi insults people can spew out, his lyrical abilities should never be questioned (street cred, maybe, but again, he’s not trying to win any gangsta of the year awards).

Drake can rap. Drake can take a song that’s average at best (insert Fetty Wap) and make it hot with just one verse.

Drake is that guy.

So, one would surmise that if Drake made a normal video, with women and cars and the typical rap scenes, that it really wouldn’t be getting the buzz that it’s getting right now, solely because of his “dance moves.”

We would say, “That’s a hot song,” it would get tons of radio play and then we would move on.

Especially considering the fact that videos have to push boundaries in order to get serious buzz. D’Angelo’s ‘How Does It Feel.’ Nicki Minaj’s ‘Anaconda.’ These two videos show that it usually takes a hot body and a willingness to bare it all to get millions of views. I’m not too sure how hot Drake’s body is, but I’m guessing it’s not something most women want to see. So, he goes to the next best thing, playing up his ability to be a complete cornball.

And in my opinion, that makes him a genius on some levels. Just type ‘hotlinebling’ into the Instagram search and watch thousands of memes pop up all revolving around his dance moves. And sure, some could say that people are laughing at him instead of with him. But, while everyone else is laughing, he’s dancing…straight to the bank.
