Fine.

That’s the word we use to describe how we are feeling.  Yet, when most people say that things are “fine,” they really mean that things are terrible, that they are on the brink of tears and that a nervous breakdown is imminent.

Fine is not a good sign.

How was your day?

Fine.

How are you feeling?

Fine.

How was your date?

Fine.

How’s work?

Fine.

We use this word to describe so many things that are not fine, i.e. the building could be burning down around us, and we have become so desensitized to stressful situations that we respond with, “This is fine,” instead of following our natural reaction of running away.

I have to be honest and say that this is how I currently feel.  Things are not fine.  Things are crazy.  But…I’m going to keep telling myself that things are fine.

Building burning.

Yep.

This is fine.
